Swine flu (H1N1 influenza) cases in India

Swine flu (H1N1 influenza) cases in India

Tamilnadu: Swine flu, also known as H1N1 flu virus, is on the rampage in many parts of the country. There are at least 5,000 admissions for fever across hospitals in Tamilnadu every day including about 60 cases of H1N1 and 40 cases of dengue. An almost equal number of people are being treated at home. According to hospital source, the swine flu death toll at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai increased to seven after a one-year-old infant succumbed on Saturday night.

Telangana: Around 70 per cent of the swine flu patients reaching hospitals in the city fall within the 20-40 age bracket in Hyderabad, Telangana. This age group is also largely responsible for the rapid spread of the disease, passing it on to family members and neighbours. According to experts, the main reason is that people from this age group are exposed more to the virus circulating in the environment as compared to children or older people. Currently H1N1 virus is highly active, 47 new cases was reported in the last two days. Of the 76 tested by IPM on Tuesday 26 found positive, similarly, of 92 samples tested, 21 were found to be positive on Wednesday. Meanwhile, with the peak season for swine flu having begun a fortnight back, experts expect the numbers to double over the next one month.

Maharashtra: According to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), there were 12 deaths and 78 positive cases of swine flu reported by October 20 and the number has increased to 19 deaths and 120 positive cases as on October 31 of this year. Of the total 19 deaths, five were from the city and the remaining 14 from other parts of Vidarbha and adjoining states. Similarly, 47 of the total 120 positive cases are from the city and the remaining 73 from other parts of Vidarbha and adjoining states. If compared with past records, the incidence of the disease this year is third highest in the recent few years. The virus had claimed 55 lives in 2014-15 and 37 in 2017-18. Positive cases were 328 in 2017-18 and 325 in 2014-15.

Karnataka: The number of Influenza A (H1N1) cases sharply increasing in Karnataka state. There were 37% increase in positive cases in the past 10 days. While the number of H1N1 positive cases reported in Karnataka this year stood at 652 till October 20, it touched 895 as on October 30. With the H1N1 scare, 975 patients with fever underwent tests for the disease over the 10 days and 243 (25%) of them tested positive.

Andhra Pradesh: The state Andhra Pradesh has reported that 138 people have tested positive for swine flu in the month of October alone. The majority of these swine flu cases were recorded in Kurnool (26 cases), Visakhapatnam (25) and Chittoor districts (26). Dr S Suresh told TNIE, 15 people have died so far due to swine flu from August to October-end. The Health Department has initiated measures to set up swine flu testing facilities and isolation wards in every district hospital, area hospital and even Community Health Centres (CHCs). All the district health officials are organising awareness camps, distributing pamphlets and put up screening centres at bus stands, railway stations and airports. People were told to wash their hands regularly and use handkerchief, while coughing to keep the disease at bay,” Dr I Ramesh, DMHO, Krishna, said.
