Spread of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China

A new virus, human metapneumovirus (HMPV), has raised concerns in China, particularly among children under 14 years of age, with cases rising in northern provinces and a few reported in Hong Kong. HMPV primarily affects the upper respiratory system, causing flu-like symptoms such as cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, and shortness of breath, with potential complications like bronchitis and pneumonia. It poses a higher risk to young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The virus is more prevalent in winter and early spring, with an estimated incubation period of three to six days.

To prevent infection, it is recommended:

·         To wash hands regularly,

·         Cover the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing,

·         Wear a mask,

·         Avoid touching the face with unwashed hands,

·         Maintain distance from sick individuals,

·         Practice self-isolation when unwell

Currently, there is no specific antiviral therapy or vaccine to prevent HMPV.
