On December 16, a case of Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 was detected in a 79-year-old woman
from Kerala as part of an ongoing routine surveillance activity of the Indian SARS-CoV-2
Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). Kerala is witnessing a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases,
where within a week, new Covid-19 cases have increased to 277%. According to the Ministry of
Health and Family Welfare, the number of active Covid-19 cases in India are 1,828 as on 18 th
December 2023 of which Kerala state has reported 1,634.
Initial symptoms of JN.1 infection include fever, runny nose, sore throat, headache, and, in
certain cases, moderate gastrointestinal problems. Symptoms usually improve in 4-5 days’ time.
Breathing problems may also be experienced by certain patients.
