Mosquito samples collected during routine surveillance from Thalakayalbetta village in the jurisdiction of Dibburahalli Primary Health Centre in Chickballapur were found to be carrying the Zika virus. The samples tested positive on October 18, 2023, according to a report from the National Institute of Virology’s state unit in Bengaluru. The virus is spread by Aedes mosquitoes, mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, the same vector of Dengue and Chikungunya. As there is no specific drug for Zika Virus Disease, the treatment is symptomatic. The suspected/confirmed cases should remain isolated and take sufficient rest, consume a lot of liquids and sleep under the mosquito nets. Pregnant women, especially in containment areas, should get their serum & urine samples tested for Zika virus antibodies.
