Weekly Outbreaks 18-06-2022

 Dengue outbreak in Tenkasi district, Tamil Nadu:

 40 people from Kasinathapuram village of tenkasi district had taken ill with fever and of them, eight people aged between 4- and 17-years tested positive for dengue. Stagnated water due to the pipe leakage was one of the major sources of mosquito breeding in the village and resulted in the dengue outbreak.

 

 

Shigellosis in Palakkad district, Kerala:

 Three children aged < 10 years in the Palakkad district were diagnosed with infection caused by Shigella bacteria.

Shigellosis and symptoms:

Shigellosis is caused by the infection of Shigella bacteria. Severe diarrhoea, fever, stomach ache, nausea and fatigue are the major symptoms, which usually start only one to two days after being infected. As the bacteria attack mainly on the intestine, blood stains could be found in the faeces. The symptoms may span from two to seven days or even more. In some cases, symptoms may not be severe

Precautions

· Seek immediate medical aid for fever, dehydration and fatigue · Drink only cooled boiled water; chlorinate water sources · Avoid eating fruits and vegetables without washing properly · Wash hands properly with soap and water after defecation and before having food. · Properly dispose the diapers of babies · Preserve fish, meat, egg and milk in advised temperature · Stay away from cooking food if you have symptoms of disease · Consume only hygienic food prepared at clean places · Disinfect toilets and washrooms.

 

 

Swine flu in Rajasthan:

 Five swine flu deaths have been reported in the month of June 2022, three in Jaipur, one each in Dholpur and Tonk districts of Rajasthan. Besides, 13 people were tested positive for the virus in the span of nine days in the month of June. The number of swine flu cases rose to 105 in 2022 (from January 1 to June 18).

 

Scrubs typhus in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala:

 A 15-year-old girl died of scrubs typhus, a fever caused by larval mites, in Thiruvananthapuram. Scrub typhus is spread to people through bites of infected chiggers (larval mites) found in squirrels, rats and rabbits. The disease is caused by a bacterium called Orientia tsutsugamushi carried by the chiggers. The chiggers from the animals get attached to grasses and the bacteria find its way to the human body through chigger bites. The most common symptoms of scrub typhus include fever, headache, body aches, and sometimes rash. Scrub typhus has similar symptoms as that of typhoid, rat fever and dengue.
