Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Bihar

A seven-year-old girl was died of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, taking the toll this year to 11. According to the hospital authorities, a total of 51 children with symptoms of AES have been admitted there since January this year out of which 11 have died. As per hospital authorities, four more children with AES symptoms have been admitted in the last 48 hours. Of them, two belong to Vaishali district while the other two hail from Muzaffarpur district. Three of the four children have been diagnosed with AES while the fourth one is being treated as unknown case of AES. The high temperature coupled with humidity in the last few days led to fresh AES cases in the region recently. Awareness campaign has been launched in rural areas to check the spread of the deadly disease. Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, East Champaran and West Champaran districts have been identified as the worst hit as majority of the AES cases were reported from there only.
