 Kyasanur forest disease outbreak at wayanad

 

Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), a viral disease transmitted to humans through a species of ticks usually found on monkeys. This tick borne fever or monkey fever is endemic South India. The first KFD case was reported this year from the Begur area in Wayanad district. The patient is undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode. The patient has been admitted to the District Hospital, Mananthavady, on 26 December 2019 with symptoms of KFD and she was referred to the MCH on 28 December 2019. The samples collected from the patient were sent to the Manipal Centre for Virus Research and it had been confirmed as a case of KFD.

 

The Health Department initiated surveillance studies in the district. Meanwhile, a meeting with senior officials of the Health, Forest and Animal husbandry Departments was organised on Friday to assess the situation. Similarly, the Forest personnel have been asked to collect details of death monkeys in areas where the outbreak of the KFD disease had been reported.The frontline forest staff and population living in high-risk zones of the forest fringes are advised to use personal protection measures, such as gloves and gumboots and repellent lotions before they entered in the forest.
