Thirteen persons are undergoing treatment for dengue and 10 treated for swine flu in the special wards in the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital during the last two weeks. Considering the increase in the number of patients, the authorities are organizing awareness campaign to prevent the spread of the disease.

Dengue has affected at least 649 people in Mizoram since February 2016 till last month, according to the official of Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP). "All the districts except Lawngtlai were affected due to the disease and six cases have been found in January itself," IDSP State Nodal Officer Pachuau Lalmalsawma said. "643 such cases were reported in the state during 2016 while six persons were affected last month from Aizawl district," Lalmalsawma said. The officer said, "Mizoram faces endemic situation as large number of people were found to be affected locally and majority of the cases have been reported from Aizawl. There are other patients who apparently got infected during their stay in Aizawl." He stated that 'Aedes aegypti' mosquito was the cause of the disease outbreak and added that no casualties have been reported in the state due to dengue so far.

Four more districts of the Assam state will be covered by the Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine campaign for adults (15-65 years) from the second week of February. The four districts - Morigaon, Nalbari, Bongaigaon and Cachar - are vulnerable to JE. With this, a total of 18 districts in the state will be covered under the programme.

 

"The vaccination drive will be based on case load. This means that the focus will be on areas that have reported the maximum number of JE and acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) cases. In Assam, adults, not kids, have been facing the brunt of the disease," a state health official.

Though cases of vector borne diseases declined compared to the previous months, the number of news cases still is significant. In January, 119 cases of vector borne infections were reported in Ahmadabad till Saturday, out of which 35 cases were those of chikungunya alone. It may be noted that these cases were reported in civic body-run hospitals alone. Health experts claim that even though the cases have declined new cases are still being reported and many of them often go undetected in blood tests but are rather confirmed by clinical diagnosis.

20 chikungunya cases, six of dengue 

As many as 20 chikungunya cases have been reported in the national capital New Delhi in January, even as the season of the vector-borne diseases ended in December. Six cases of dengue have also been reported last month, according to a municipal report released today. A total of 4,431 cases of dengue were reported till the end of 2016, according to the report by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation which tabulates the data on behalf of all municipal corporations in the city. Till January 14, only two chikungnuya cases were reported, while no dengue case had been reported till then.

 

Chikungunya and dengue cases in the national capital had tapered off by December first week ending the vector-borne disease season in the city that witnessed its outbreak in the last 10 years.

At least 15 fatalities were reported last year at various hospitals in the city due to complications triggered by chikungunya, though the civic bodies have kept the death tally at zero.

 

At least 21 deaths due to dengue have been reported at various hospitals, including nine at AIIMS, though the official tally of the SDMC stands at 10. 17 suspected deaths due to malaria have also been reported by the civic bodies. In one of the worst outbreak, a total of 12,221 cases were reported in Delhi till December 24, out of which 9,749 were confirmed. The season for the vector-borne diseases begins from mid July and generally lasts till November-end.

Just days after the fear of H5N8 (Bird Flu) in Mysuru City was reported, H1N1 (Swine Flu) has reared its ugly head across the district. Just in one month since New Year, hospitals in the city have witnessed 27 suspected cases with 8 samples testing positive for H1N1. Of eight cases, four patients have been cured and discharged from hospital and another four are still being treated in hospitals across the city. Of 27 cases, Mysuru urban has recorded 17 cases while taluks in the district have shared 10 cases.
